I was born and raised on the coast of New Jersey and moved to West Texas (Lubbock, to be exact) in 2001. I was one very confused Yankee for most of the time that I lived there.

Things I Learned While Living in West Texas
(a.k.a. Observations of a Displaced Yankee)

Days with 45mph sustained winds are considered "a little breezey".

If you put goats in the field with bulls, the bulls won't fight. No one knows why, it just works.

Putting mules in the fields with horses keeps the horses calmer. Again, no one knows why, it just does.

The real meaning of the term "wind chill factor".

The words "hail" and "golfballs" can indeed be used in the same sentence.

Any building over two stories tall is considered a "highrise"

Watching on TV as the Times Square New Years Ball drops at midnight is pointless...it's only 11:00 pm here.

A pickup truck is considered the family vehicle...and can also be a police car.

Every man, woman and child here owns a gun...do NOT piss these people off.

Willie Nelson is a musical genius.

If you are allergic to something growing in Kansas, you will be sneezing if it's "a little breezy" outside.

In case of tornado warnings, go immediately to the front porch so you can watch it come in.

I don't care what anyone says, the "Texas Two-Step" is actually three steps.
